How to Understand Car Price Before Negotiating

The last time we talked about How to Understand Car Price Before Negotiating it was a banger. This time, we will take it deeper.

If I walk into a car stand today and see a beautiful Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, or Toyota, the first thing I will not ask the dealer for the last price, I will talk about the car with him as if I don’t have interest on the car.

That way I will put him in a lower position that will have him have to convince me about the car, giving me change the understand the pricing and even gain more bargaining power.

Why? Because the moment you ask for the last price without understanding the car’s actual market value, you are negotiating blindly.

The seller knows how much they want to sell the car for. But do you know how much it is worth?

That’s the work it’s totally on you.

This is something I believe every car buyer should understand. Before you negotiate a car price, you need to know what similar cars sell for, what makes one car more expensive than another, and how to recognise when a seller’s asking price is unreasonable.

But not being desperate about the car will give you more power to pay less than you would.

Here is how I would approach it as Lawrencegotkeys.

Research the Price of the Exact Car You Want

Let’s say I want to buy a 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 in Benin Sapele Road,

I will not just search for the price of a Mercedes-Benz GLE and assume every result applies to the car I want.

I will search for the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 price, compare listings, and look at vehicles with similar specifications and conditions.

If I am buying in Nigeria, ( don’t worry it applies to any country regardless) I will compare prices of Nigerian-used and foreign-used cars separately. I will also consider the vehicle’s location and whether the dealer price includes the costs I will incur before driving it home.

I will check several listings from different dealers instead of relying on one seller.

For example, if similar cars are sold for ₦35 million, ₦37 million, and ₦38 million, I now have a starting point for understanding the asking price.

And if I’m patient enough I will check seasonal trend, what period of the year I’m most likely to get better deal?

At my blog Lawrencegotkeys, I know that researching the market value of a used car before visiting a dealer gives you a better chance of making an informed offer.

Okay don’t you ask for prices of tomatoes from different sell in the market before paying?

Understand Why Two Cars of the Same Model Have Different Prices

This is where many buyers make mistakes.

They see two 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 cars and wonder why one costs more than the other.

The answer could be the condition, mileage, maintenance history, accident history, trim, features, or import status.

One car may have a clean maintenance record and require little immediate attention. Another may have transmission problems, worn tyres, damaged bodywork, or an engine that needs repairs. I will gist you one gist in my next post.

Would I pay the same amount for both cars? No.

Before negotiating a car price, I will investigate what makes the particular vehicle worth the amount the seller is demanding.

I will also ask a qualified mechanic to inspect the car before making a final decision.

Understanding the condition of a car helps you understand its price.

Find Out What the Seller Is Actually Offering

Imagine a dealer tells me that a particular car costs ₦45 million.

Before negotiating, I want to understand exactly what that price covers.

Is the vehicle ready for immediate use? Are the documents available and verifiable? Does it need servicing or repairs? Are there additional charges I should know about?

These questions matter because the dealer car price is not always the total cost of owning the vehicle. What if he actually stayed in him room and just add up random figures just because he wants to?

Still on what I will tell you, If I discover that the car needs new tyres and immediate servicing, I will factor those expenses into my buying decision.

However, I will not automatically demand a discount for every minor issue. I will focus on genuine problems that affect the car’s value or require additional spending.

This is how I would approach car price negotiation without making an offer based on assumptions.

Know Your Offer Before You Meet the Seller

After researching the market, I will decide three things.

The first is the price I believe the car is worth based on comparable listings and its condition.

The second is my opening offer, which should be reasonable enough to start a serious discussion.

The third is my maximum budget, which I will not exceed simply because I have fallen in love with the car.

For example, if a seller asks for ₦45 million and my research suggests that comparable vehicles are generally sold around ₦35 million to ₦38 million, I will consider the condition of the car before deciding what to offer.

I will not automatically offer ₦45 million just because I want. An offer that is too low without justification may end the conversation before it starts.

Instead, I will explain my offer using the prices of comparable cars and any genuine issues I have identified.

The goal is not just to negotiate a lower price. It is to pay a fair price for the right car.

Never Let the Seller Rush Your Decision

One thing I would never do is allow a seller to make me feel that I must buy a car immediately.

If a dealer says several buyers are interested, I will remain focused on my research.

The car might genuinely attract other buyers, but that does not mean I should abandon my budget or skip an inspection.

If the seller refuses a reasonable offer, I can walk away and continue searching.

There will always be other cars to consider, and buying the wrong one because I was afraid of missing a deal makes no sense.

At Lawrencegotkeys, I want buyers to understand that negotiating a car price requires patience, preparation, and the willingness to say no.

My Final Advice Before Negotiating a Car Price

Before you negotiate, research the exact model and year, compare similar listings, understand the vehicle’s condition, and calculate the additional costs you may face.

Do not depend entirely on the seller’s asking price to determine what a car is worth.

Use evidence, ask questions, and make an offer you can justify.

Lawrencegotkeys is built around helping car buyers understand what they are buying, why a car is worth its price, and how to make better purchasing decisions.

Remember, the best negotiation is not necessarily the one where you pay the least money. It is the one where you understand the car’s value and know why the price you agreed to makes sense
